Quest for Democracy is a project of Legal Services for Prisoners with Children. We work on two different levels. First, we teach people how to be badass policy makers in California through legislative advocacy trainings and lobbying days in Sacramento. Second, we change the dynamic of who gets to make laws. We are a group of formerly incarcerated people and allies. We understand the system because weve lived through it. By working together to support good bills and bad bills (through letter writing, in-person testimony in Sacramento, coalition building, and getting anyone and everyone we know to do the same), we can make sure that the only voices heard in Sacramento are not those of people who have never been incarcerated, and dont really understand the effects of the laws they are passing. Laws made behind closed doors, proposed and voted on by uninformed legislators, without our voices, is bad law. Bit by bit, we are changing that.
