Question by Veikko: Selective Mutism Vs. Social Anxiety? Whats the difference between selective mutism and social anxiety? would a person who has selective mustism have social anxiety, but they physically cant talk to strangers? or ?? Best answer: Answer by ShereedaSocial anxiety is anxiety such as emotional discomfort, fear, apprehension, or worry about social situations, interactions with others, and being evaluated or scrutinized by other people. With Social Anxiety there is an intense feeling of fear in social situations and especially situations that are unfamiliar or in which you will be watched or evaluated by others. The feeling of fear is so strong that in these types of situations one may be so worried that they feel anxious just thinking about them and will go to great lengths to avoid them. Whereas, selective mutism is an anxiety disorder in which a person, most often a child, who is normally capable of speech is unable to speak in given situations, or to specific people. Selective mutism usually co-exists with shyness or (often severe) social anxiety. So in other words selective mutism is a severe form of social anxiety. Know better?
