Question of the Day The ongoing show of muscle between South Sudans President Kiir and the ousted vice president Riek Machar has taken another dimension. More than a dozen members of South Sudans ruling Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement (SPLM) have quit the party and sided with rebels led by Riek Machar, saying they can no longer work with a government that kills its own people, foments tribalism, and commits other ills. One of the defected parliamentarians, Gatluak Riek Jak, from Maiwut in Upper Nile state, said on Monday that Those are the people that elected us to parliament. If they are being killed there is no need for us to be working with the same government. But President Kiir has overtime accused the ousted vice president of using rebels to fight his own people [citizens] thereby resulting in countless deaths in the country. This direct attack by the defecting lawmakers is raising fresh doubts on president Kiirs stance in the whole issue. We therefore ask in our question of the day: With such serious accusations and counter- accusations, would it be possible for the two sides to reach a common ground?
