Question of the Day: Tips on making Great Cosplays Fellow cosplayer had asked me to share some tips on making great costumes. So I’m starting with the basics first. :) Layout/ Outline- First and foremost, start out with a good outline sketch of what you want first. Planning makes perfect. After you’ve got a good idea on what your costume looks like; then figure out the logistics. Important things to look out for when making a costume are: Range of mobility - Can you move around in the costume comfortably? In a lot of armor cosplays I find this very important! If your armor doesn’t have enough space in between to let you move around or bend your arms it will be hard to manage and walk around and event. Now some costumes are designed to be difficult so in those cases no problem. But if you’re looking to walk around normally; I’d suggest you carefully measure your pieces! Take into account that when you bend, you need extra room in order to rotate and flex a limb. Wearing armor is cool but not cool to be standing around like a frozen popsicle because you can’t bend your knees or arms. Weight of materials - Will your finished piece be heavy to wear or light? Depending on the type of materials you use and how much is layered a piece can go from light and flexible to heavy and bulky. You have to keep in mind you might be wearing that cosplay for a few hours. So when constructing the pieces keep that in mind. Cause believe it or not fabric can be very heavy and craft foam too if enough is layered together. Temperature - Will you be too hot or too cold? A.K.A. Does the convention have A/C? Another common thing to consider, depending on the season of the convention or event/shoot you may want to make your cosplay out of a lighter or slightly heavier fabric due to the environment you’ll be in. There’s nothing wrong with wearing a jacket over your cosplay to stay warm. I’ve even gotten outer wear to match my cosplays in the cooler months. Because it isn’t cute to catch a cold just to look good! Runny nose and make up don’t work together, lol! Crowd control – Basically making sure your costume can be worn while walking through a tight knit crowd. This of course is all based on the amount of people at your event. Some conventions have more leg room than others. So having wide wings or a skirt with a slightly long train may or may not be a good idea. I’m big on making sure my props are crowd friendly. Cause whether or not you want it to happen, people will bump into you. I hate it but it’s unavoidable in a crowded area, lol. Just gotta go with the flow and make sure you have flexible staffs, bendy arrows and strong fabric that won’t tear if stepped on. These things and more are very important when creating a great costume. Because if the outfit is really uncomfortable then you aren’t going to enjoy wearing it no matter how good it may look. Keep the questions coming, I love sharing advice! Live long and Cosplay, GeishaVi (=^.^=)
