Question of the day! Right now I am taking a course in Counseling Diverse Population. One of our discussion board topics is to watch this video and write our thoughts about it. https://youtube/watch?v=CWcs7YsZVuY The discussions and feedback are great. What I love about school, especially psychology,is it makes me look at things more closely or differently. (compared to math) Anyways, this topic and a bunch of the feedback had me questioning my cultural background. Does blood and physical appearance define your culture and who you are or does how you are raised define your culture and make you who you are? Many of you may know that I was adopted. My biological dad is mostly Italian whereas my bio mom is majority German with Czech, Bohemian, French, Austrian and a bunch of other stuff. My adopted mom is sisters with my bio mom, so they have to same background. My adopted dad is mainly German and Mexican. For the longest time I have always associated myself with being Italian because that is the majority of my blood background. However, I wasnt raised in an Italian family or culture and I dont even really look like the typical Italian. Had I never known that I was part Italian I would have never identified myself that way. To me, I really dont know what kind of cultural background I have. I believe blood and physical appearance does not make ones culture. I believe it is in how you are raised. What do you all think?
