Question(s) of the Day: People generally assume that we are the same person today that we were yesterday; that we are the same person to whom our mother gave birth, and who will lie in the grave bearing our name. If this is true, there must be something that remains constant and unchanged about us throughout time, from the cradle to the grave (and perhaps beyond, if you are so inclined to believe). What part of a person (if any) remains identical through time? If nothing is self-identical over time, then how do I justify claiming "rights" for something that does not exist? If something is self-identical over time, then is it at all possible to give an empirical account of this self-identity, or do we have to revert to supernatural metaphysics?
