Question to my fellow dancers and choreographers, especially those - TopicsExpress

Question to my fellow dancers and choreographers, especially those at/from other schools, but also just to anyone with something to say: I was told by a professor that a piece I am choreographing has great movement vocabulary and sense of construction but that the music cheapens it (which is an edited version of Byegone by Volcano Choir) It seems that because my music isnt obscure enough, that means its too competition dance, regardless of the sophistication of choreographic content. Im just curious- are other collegiate dance programs instilling similar perspectives when it comes to composition? Ultimately it seems close minded and a little outdated to me. Its certainly a stylistic preference but also a reluctance to see the concert and commercial worlds intersect. I have a tough time subscribing to a belief that states as soon as a drum kicks in or an electric guitar, a song has become too explicit to accompany a dance work. Thoughts and experiences? Im genuinely curious more than anything, to each his own!
