Question – How much water does a mature horse require? Answer – An average 1100 lb. horse not doing any exercise should drink between 5 and 10 gallons per day. If the temperature goes above 100 degrees Fahrenheit the water requirements increase to approximately 20 gallons per day. Exercising horses have higher requirements for water and depending on the exercise intensity should drink about 25-30 gallons of water per day. If horses are not provided with adequate water, performance will decrease dramatically. Even mild dehydration will cause a decreased tolerance to exercise. Performance horses should be given the opportunity to drink before, during, and following recovery from exercise.
