Questions for every MP and Senator. Here are the 8 questions in the letter we are sending to every MP and Senator. 1. Do you support the current policy settings and framework that governs the treatment of Asylum seekers who come to Australia seeking safety? 2. If you do support detention, would you support a 20 day time limit on how long an individual may be kept in detention, whilst identity, health and security checks are completed? 3. Would you support immediate closure of the Manus Island and Nauru “prison camps”? 4. Would you support reversing the Government’s recent ban on allowing those found to be genuine refugees in Indonesia to come to Australia? 5. Would you support increasing the humanitarian refugee intake, dedicated to Asylum Seekers in Indonesia, so as to establish a meaningful and credible alternative to seeking to arrive in Australia by boat? 6. Will you support the repeal of the “Migration and Maritime Powers Legislation Amendment (Resolving the Asylum Legacy Caseload)” Bill 2014 passed on December 4th, and allow the re-instatement of the legal and court oversight of the Minister of Immigrations actions, and the few remaining legal protections that Asylum seekers enjoyed prior to the passage of the Act? 7. Should Australia comply with all its obligations under the various international agreements relating to the treatment of Asylum seekers and refugees it is party to? Namely- The Refugees Convention The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights The Convention on the Rights of the Child The Convention Against Torture 8. At a time of considerable stress on the Federal Budget do you support the expenditure of $3bn on the policy of imprisoning Asylum Seekers? If so do you think the Australian Tax Payer gets value for money? Please down load the template letter and send to your MP and Senators. We will “name and shame” them for their cruelty and abuse of human rights of refugees sanctuaryforrefugees.au/resources
