Quick timeline: Jefferson is winning in popularity over Adams--Xenophobia grips the nation with the fear of French Agents from the recent French Revolution are coming to cause a revolution here. Fear is used to attack supporters of Jefferson. Jeffersons party is dominate in the nation. As the four candidates for President are all Democrats--Immigration is again the major problem with the country even though immigrants will make up a good portion of our forces in the coming Civil War. After the Civil War with the Republican Party firmly seated in the Capital (between 1860 and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, about a 70 year period, only Andrew Johnson, Grover Cleveland, and Woodrow Wilson are the only Democratic Presidents. Immigrants make up the bulk of those patrolling the West while Chinese help to build our railroads. Turn of the century with the greed and abuses of the economic scenario the Republicans adopted and implemented since the Civil War, Capitalism, the active government involvement in aiding those who are in possession of capital--factors of production except labor there is a surge in socialists and anarchists. Immigrants are blamed for the national ails. Theodore Roosevelt recognizes the danger of a real revolution and immediately launches legislation to help labor making him a pariah in his own party and class does alleviate the tensions from labor. Japanese Americans, Nisei, are rounded up and placed in interment camps, a nicer sounding name than concentration camp, as America which has been supplying the allies and provoking the Axis Powers enters the war. Following the overwhelming defeat of the republicans by the highly successful FDR because he went on the side of the labor, Republicans use individuals such as Joseph McCarthy to seed the American Public with fears of communist infiltration in the State Department and Immigrants. They define what is an American with the use of organizations like the HUAC and start witch hunts under McCarthyism. And it just continues as a political tool to this day.
