Quid Pro Quo and the Department Heads In the better managed hotels it was well established and clearly understood that the department bosses ran their areas with complete autonomy. I learned how the game went early into my hotel days. Even though I ruled the outdoor pool, sitting where I wanted to in the night club without returning a favor to the night club boss was not going to happen unless he were provided with free chaises for him and his girl friend or wife and kids. Speaking of the night club, any bartender wanting free chaises would return the favor with free drinks. When the maitre d of the dining room supplied me with large tables and chairs for my big poker games, he could also expect free poolside chaises in the shallow end for his family. At another hotel the coffee shop boss never charged me for milk shakes for allowing his daughter to swim in the closed indoor pool a few nights a week. In one particular hotel the head chef even personally served me my favorite dish for holding two chairs for him and his mistress under the shade canopy. It was considered highly crass to ever ask for money for a favor, and during my 17 years money never came up. Reciprocity was common among the bosses, and the owners knew about it, but they seldom interfered because they all respected talent, so if you did your job well, you were left alone.
