Quinn is all settled watching her fish tank just in time for an update! She is recovering from her G-tube surgery fantastically! She was intubated for the surgery and basically pulled the tube out herself as soon as she was waking up from anesthesia! She is so feisty, her doctors think shes hilarious. But she is doing great, smiling, and getting used to feedings through her tube every 3 hours. She is coming off methadone tomorrow! They want to observe her for 48-72 hours to make sure she copes well with it, and then we will be discharged! Right now the plan is that we get to room in with her on Sunday night so we can practice using the feeding tube equipment overnight and practice caring for her needs under their supervision in case we need help with anything. Her swallow study (they look at her under X-Ray while she drinks a little milk) was this morning. It showed us that she is indeed aspirating as she drinks :( This means she cant eat by mouth for sure right now until her internal muscles are strong enough to direct the milk to the correct pipe. This weakness has occurred because of how long she was on ECMO and how long she was on a ventilator. But over time the hope is that she will be able to eat by mouth little by little. Thats what our home healthcare team will be working with is on :) So thats the basics. We are so ready to be home with her. The nurses and doctors are in awe that she isnt going home on oxygen after all she went through. Ill never forget the phone call I received the night she was admitted telling me her chances of making it through the night are pretty much non-existent unless we get her on ecmo. As a mom, hearing that your child is close to death breaks you. But holy cow, the healing has been as much for her as it has for Tim and me. So grateful we are here at the end of our stay and that we can be a family.
