Quote- In Shin Min’s report, it did not reveal which law firm Yang’s lawyer, Daniel Zhu, is working for. However, a reader wrote in today (18 Sep) to inform TRE that, in fact, Daniel Zhu works for Straits Law Practice LLC. Daniel Zhu is a relatively young associate lawyer with Straits Law. He graduated from NUS in 2010 and called to the Singapore Bar in 2011. Before that he studied in Temasek Polytechnic and was an intern with Straits Law. According to the website of Straits Law [Link], it is a limited law corporation registered as a company in Singapore. It has some 34 lawyers, including foreign ones. It was incorporated in 2001 from the merged practices of Derrick Ravi Partnership and Raja Loo & Chandra. In 2006, Straits Law incorporated the practice of Choo & Lim LLC. It specialises in areas of Litigation, Banking, Conveyancing and Corporate practice. Directors of Straits Law Practice LLC are grassroots leaders One of its director, Rajaram, was a former Police Officer who was admitted to the Supreme Court of Singapore in 1980 [Link]. He is a Past Chairman of the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and was the Vice-Chairman of the Singapore Business Federation, and Council Member of ASEAN Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Rajaram, a PBM holder, is a grassroots leader and actively involved himself in grassroots activities. He is also a Patron of the Taman Jurong Citizenship Consultative Committee, having served as a member of the Taman Jurong CCC for many years. He assists in running the legal clinic at Jurong Meet-the-People-Session on a weekly basis. Rajaram sits as an Independent Director in some Companies listed in the Singapore Stock Exchange. He is also a Term Trustee in Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA). For his contributions to society, Rajaram was bestowed the PBM. Another director who is active in grassroots activities is Jennifer Lim Lay Choo [Link]. Ms Lim graduated from the University of East Anglia, UK in 1990. She was called to the Singapore Bar in 1993. She also served 3 years in the Singapore Police Force (SPF) from 1985 to 1988. She is said to be also very active in various grassroots orgaisations. She serves as legal advisor in various trade associations, merchant associations, temples, etc. One of Straits Law’s associate lawyer, Chio Su-Mei, also involves herself in grassroots activities [Link]. She studied Law at the University of Durham (UK) and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2011. Prior to commencing legal practice, Su-Mei was a researcher in the Ministry of Defence, and then a broadcast journalist at the regional news network Channel NewsAsia. Su-Mei is said to have a keen interest in community and social issues and volunteers at grassroots activities. Govt’s REACH Supervisory Panel According to this media release by Govt’s feedback unit REACH [Link], one of Straits Law’s lawyer, Mr Ahmad Nizam Abbas, was appointed a supervisory panel member of REACH from 2010 to 2012. Incidentally, Straits Times’ Political Editor, Ms Chua Lee Hoong, was also a fellow supervisory panel member of REACH during the same period. Presently, Mr N. Sreenivasan, Managing Director of Straits Law has been appointed as a supervisory panel member of REACH [Link]. It’s not known how Mr Yang knew Straits Law and chose the law firm to represent him in his current legal fight with Mdm Chung’s niece. It’s likely that he was introduced to Straits Law through his grassroots connections. It has been reported that Mr Yang was a grassroots member in Ang Mo Kio GRC. He has since resigned from his grassroots activities after Mdm Chung’s niece proceeded to sue him. Unquote-
