Quote of The Day “Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.” – Oprah Winfrey Did You Know about the 30 Million Word Gap by age 3? There is a study by Betty Hart and Todd R. Risley that shows children of color, children of low income families, children that live in poverty to have a smaller vocabulary to that of children who come from families that are European / White and of a higher social economic status / middle class / wealthy. As early childhood practitioners we must prevent this from happening to children we serve from infancy through age five. How Can you ensure that children are prepared for kindergarten ? Cognitive experiences are sequential, engaging children birth through age five in open ended questions that promote thought, problem solving, and critical thinking. Examples include; Having a print rich environment where everything is labeled, a minimum of five clearly defined learning centers in classrooms where children are six months through age five. A minimum of ten Age appropriate books for each age group. All cubicles, shelves, walls, tables, chairs, and furniture labeled with pictures. Talk to the children about everything that happens from the time that they arrive until they depart each day. Experience in infancy establish habits of seeking, noticing, and incorporating new and more complex experiences, as well as schemas for categorizing and thinking about experiences. Einstein Never Used Flash Cards “Language gets learned in the context of interaction – in the context of eating and playing and asking for the name of things, not passively looking at a computer monitor or television. This is where parents and practitioners come in: We make the interactions possible. Who you are, how/what you say and do as you engage with children makes a difference in what they learn. “Reading builds upon language. A strong language foundation in vocabulary, storytelling, and phonological awareness is central to emergent literacy. Reading is not just about language; it is also about knowledge of the print itself. "First you have to be able to tell the letters apart second, you need to learn what sounds each letter or letter group made, third you need to know how to blend the letters and sounds together (Pasek, Golinkoff, Eyer)”. Every interaction holds the potential to make a positive impact on how children feel about themselves and about learning and how they learn. Our children are constantly showing us how they feel through their facial expressions, how tightly they hold our hands, or by their tentative walk. "We give our children vocabulary that will help them navigate through difficult moments and celebrate the great moments with others (Pasek, Golinkoff, Eyer)”. Think and Prepare: Do I need to adjust to connect with this child, and if so, how?
