Quotes from Conference Proceedings: April 7, 2014 Most of the political crises we face are coming from people in their 60s and above who still have the mind-set of the 1940s and they want to impose 1940 and 1950 on our country. Young people, the working people in the rural areas and urban cities, women and the physically challenged are the most important people and how we treat them will show the future of our country and how we move forward. We have to put Nigerians to work, if we don’t have people working, we will continue to have the crisis that we face. If we don’t have Nigerians running on the basis of a patriotic economic agenda where the people of Nigeria are central to the reality of the economy, we will continue to have the crisis we have no matter the amount of prayers in churches and mosques will change that reality. - Is’haq Modibo Kawu of the Nigerian Guild of Editors If all Nigerians are passionate, we will move out of poverty. If all Nigerians can speak the truth, we will move away from violence. If all Nigerians can love one another, we will not come here to talk about resource control or poverty. Nigeria is not a poor country. If you want to know poor country, go to Somalia and Ethiopia, poverty is written on the face of the people there. Nigeria is not a poor country; it is our heart that is poor. It is our attitude that is poor. Therefore, I call on every Nigerian to repent. We should repent. This conference is born out of pain. The youths are pain, elders are pain, the women are pain because of the way we treated one another. We have cheated the less privileged, we have cheated the youths, we have cheated the women. We have even cheated our self. Therefore, I pray according to the Bible, let God create in us a new heart and a new spirit. With that spirit of a passionate attitude, Nigerians will become a great country. - Chief (Mrs). Remi Kuku It saddens me to see our elders gathered here to be talking about tribe, region and religion. We want them to all unite. We all agree that we have a common enemy. Our common enemies are poverty, injustice, corruption, unemployment, terrorism. Some months ago, some young children were murdered in cold blood in Yobe State. What was their crime? Their crime is being young, innocent Nigerian children in school. It is sad. It is painful. I want us to unite and form an army, a battalion of Nigerians to fight our common enemy. Our common enemy knows no Christian; knows no Muslim. They kill all of us. We have to unite to fight them. - Yadomah Bukar Mandara, a 24 years old youth delegate representing youth organisation
