R.I.P Heel Extension It is with great sadness to hear of the passing of former Orlando Pirates player Amos ‘Heel Extension’ Mkhari. Mkhari spent more than eight years at Pirates as a hero of The Ghost, producing miracles with his clean backheels that would have been frowned on in today’s stiff, formalised football. A left-winger who dribbled neatly and had good finishing, Mkhari made backheeling look like a simple thing to do on the park. A ‘gliding’ kind of player who possessed awareness and vision, he was always confident that the leather would reach his teammate and not an opponent when he touched it back with his left heel. He made that kind of pass look as simple as if it was a Sunday morning kick-about in Soweto, not a big cup match at Orlando Stadium. Who else could feed a striker in the box with one flick of a heel which changed the direction of the ball under pressure even if it was at a pace? Who else was ready to try as bold a move as setting off his forwards with through-passes executed from as far away as the halfway line – with the heel of his boot! Mkhari was a true legend when real legends were deservedly called legends, unlike today when any former player is called a legend. Rest In Peace qhawe lama qhawe.
