R.I.P Jane Baker who has passed away today. Jane, along with her husband Pip, wrote 3 stories for Doctor Who during the Colin Baker era; The Mark of the Rani, Terror of the Vervoids and The Ultimate Foe, as well as the first Sylvester McCoy serial Time and the Rani. Jane Baker is also one of only four women to write (or co-write) Doctor Who novelizations (she co-wrote her four Doctor Who serials with her husband) The two are probably most well known for the circumstances surrounding The Ultimate Foe where writer Robert Holmes passed away after writing the draft for Part 1 and leaving an outline for Part 2. Eric Saward then re-wrote Part 1 and wrote a Part 2 before disagreements with producer John Nathan-Turner caused him to resign and he refused the production team to use his scripts, meaning Pip and Jane had to re-write the re-written script in a very short amount of time. The fact that The Ultimate Foe was actually watchable and slightly coherent after all of those background shenanigans takes a lot of skill, which Pip and Jane clearly had. My thoughts are with her family and friends.
