R.I.P. On Tuesday, we brought Princess into the vet for care. She had been turned in by her owners who said they could not keep her because they were moving. She arrived at the vet with her nails imbedded into her paws, infected and bloody, and she couldnt stand from the pain. She was also terribly ill and dehydrated and as it turned out, diabetic. She was in incredibly poor condition, but this kind, old basset lab deserved a shot so we gave it everything we had to save her. It wasnt enough as it turned out and yesterday afternoon, Princess left this world while the vet and I talked to her and told her we loved her. This is the 25th time in the past year that I personally have had to hold a dying dog and it never gets easier. I will never know what horrors Princess suffered before she got to us and all we could offer her was four days of peace and care and concern. I will never understand what kind of subhuman could take a 10-year-old dog they named Princess (in a fit of unintentional irony) and leave her at a kill shelter to suffer, scared and alone in a noisy kennel. This shelter thankfully gave a damn about what happened to her and they asked us to step in to rescue her. I am happy to have done so as those four days of peace were the only kindness we could offer to make up in some small way for what came before, but I am sick to death of watching dogs suffer because some jackwad couldnt be bothered to care for their pet. This dog died yesterday just like many others before her and most of the time, I say nothing as its too depressing for words and we all have enough misery to contend with. This time, though, I wanted to say something because this dog mattered to me, even if this dogs owners didnt give a damn. She deserved so much better than she got and I sincerely hope that somehow, these cretins see this and feel some shame for they way they abandoned their dog and left her to die. Au revoir Princess. We will see you on the other side. As to her owners, I have no words for the contempt I hold you in.
