RAAFSTT and RAAF Wagga in the late 70s was a great source of material for this site. When doing Trainee Fitters in early 1978, I remember one Tuesday Morning stand by bed inspection, one of our course, who frequents this site, so no names, no pack drill, was found to have about a one pound can of cartridge loading gun powder in his locker. He was told to get rid of it. One night, we got one of those metal waste paper bins we all had in each room, took it outside the block. It was dark. He emptied the contents of the powder into the bin. Now we were under the eaves of the two storey block (no 418 I think) that was on the corner opposite the cinema and parade ground. He lit the powder and we all stood back, then back further as the flames launched up to the eaves of the roof on the second storey. Man, that was amazing. No it wasnt, it was bloody scary. We then bolted before anyone came to investigate. Never forget that night. It remains one of those little life memories that sharpens the senses.
