RACE MATTERS; When it dont crack! I really appreciate frank conversations about race with white folk, even the tough ones. While I am a strong advocate for reconciliation among the races, I understand how each race has made it to the present space they are in. Just had a hilarious conversation with a white, male patron at my job; it was a real ELLEN moment. Now, he is about 59 and perhaps 280; a portly, talkative, sweatband and long tube socks type of guy. Oh yeah, he has a head full of curly, black hair. Lastly, he doesnt have an age-look, but rather an age-range look. (He could be between 30 and 50, no bull.) It started of with him looking at me with the sad face, and my having to speak because, well...hes a patron. Me: he man, how are you. Dude: (imagine very, very long sigh here) well, not so good considering my morning work out didnt start off so good. Me: (imagine me praying that this was the last sentence in our exchange) oh, ok. Glad youre better. Have a good day! Dude: well, I didnt say I was better. Me: ok. Sorry. I presumed that saying DIDNT START OFF implied that you are better now. Dude: well, I am! But my muscles ache. Me: (now, I know his age and I was shocked!) well, young man, wait til you become my age! Dude: you obviously have no clue how old I am, because Im sure Im older than you. Me: uh, I kinda do know how old you are. Remember I work here. Dude: then how old are you? Me: 44. Dude: oh yeah, Im 34. You dont look 44 at all! But thats not a shocker. Me: thanks Dude: yeah. I dont mean this in a racist way, but you black people just look so much younger than you are! Did you know that Black women get carded more than any other group in this country, and its not because theyre black, but because they look so young. And black men are second! Sheesh! I hope youre not offended, but its true. Ive carded black people your age when I was a bar tender! Me: not offended at all. Hahaha.
