RACERS COMPETE FOR THE PHILADELPHIA CUP SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 Sailboats of all Sizes to Race on the Delaware River The Philadelphia Cup Regatta returns for the third year on the Delaware River with a series of lively One Design races between two of Philadelphia’s most picturesque bridges. The event is expected to draw more than 100 boats and 350 sailors from the surrounding region in a daylong series of races starting at 9 a.m., September 28, 2013. Independence Seaport Museum, along with The Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia, Liberty Sailing Association, Riverton Yacht Club, and more than a dozen other clubs, will host the event. The races will take place roughly between the Betsy Ross and Walt Whitman Bridges with the 2nd floor balcony of the Seaport Museum being the prime viewing spot. The awards ceremony will take place at 5pm. The Philadelphia Cup 2013 Regatta promises to be an exciting event for the public and all participants. The regatta is one day of racing with eight racing fleets: PHRF A, PHRF B, J-27, J-22, Laser, Sunfish, Lightning and Mariner. Trophies will be awarded to winners in each fleet. “We are thrilled to be the home of The Philadelphia Cup Regatta and to promote sailboat racing on the Delaware River,” said Independence Seaport Museum CEO John Brady. “This day will be spectacular for everyone from the avid sailor to the curious visitor.” In 1977, to promote public interest in sailboat racing on the Delaware River, the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, asked Delaware River Yacht Racing Association, to organize and officiate an open regatta called The Philadelphia Cup. The first regatta, composed of sailboat cruiser/racers under two PHRF classes, spinnaker and non-spinnaker, attracted several boats from local yacht clubs and sailing organizations to compete for the Cup. The races were run from Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia. In subsequent years, The Philadelphia Cup became an annual sailboat race event with the perpetual Cup awarded to the winner. The Philadelphia Cup perpetual trophy is a silver plate 15” Revere bowl with a large square wooden base on which the winner names, dates, yachts and class are affixed on separate engraved plates. The Cup will be maintained by and kept on public exhibition at Independence Seaport Museum. Founded in 1960 by J. Welles Henderson, the Independence Seaport Museum maintains one of the largest maritime collections in North America, combining more than 25,000 artifacts with hands-on exhibits, large-scale models, and audiovisuals. In addition to exhibits, the Museum has a working wooden boat shop, the J. Welles Henderson Archives and Library and a concert hall hosting the Penn’s Landing Playhouse’s production of “You Say Tomato, I say Shut Up”. The Museum also includes two National Historic Landmark ships—the Spanish-American War Cruiser, Olympia, and the World War II Submarine Becuna. Located at Philadelphia’s Penn’s Landing Waterfront, the museum is open year round. Visit phillyseaport.org for more information.
