RACISM STOPS WITH ME - HARRY BISSOON A Response To Saras Call for Racial Unity in Guyana. There are many of us who believe in, and aspire to such utopian heights, but reality and societal structures hinder us from such an achievement. These structures would have to be broken down and be replaced with a new reality. Many of us have grown up and prospered in ethnically diverse societies and lived in peace and harmony, defending each other, whenever the occasions arose. So what is wrong with us? Nothing! Nothing? Not really! We have become blind. Blinded by forces that press against us and twist our minds. Blinded by the powers that we have given to those who beg to be our leaders! Our leaders, our politicians are nothing but power mongers who use politics to bend our will and make us their pawns. We are all tribal and bending our will through the art of getting us to do what we do not want to do, creates creatures who erect barriers around their tribes and seek to build these barriers, higher and higher, to protect the tribe. Our will to be human must prevail if we are to break these societal structures and create a new order. We must learn to respect and honor each others culture and ethnicity if we want to strive for a better way to live in a plural, multi - ethnic, multi - racial society. Only then will democracy work. Only then will we be able to appreciate the call of the drums that produce such entreating melodies which our African and Indian heritage want us to listen to.
