RAFF - Residents Action on Fylde Fracking response to Cameron’s “Let’s make Blackpool the centre of Europe for the shale gas industry” speech “Let’s make Blackpool the centre of Europe for the shale gas industry,” said David Cameron in his speech at the Conservative Party Conference. RAFF has issued a response to this statement: “Although unsurprising, as David Cameron has been pushing for the public to accept ‘fracking’ for some time, the fact that he singled out Blackpool to be ‘the centre of shale gas production in Europe certainly localises and focuses the deep concern. The government claims this will have ‘downward pressure on the upward motion’ of gas prices is simply spin; unlike the USA, the UK is part of the global market and does NOT set its own gas prices, regardless of the source of that gas. As for jobs in the industry, David Cameron fails to mention the industries that will suffer job losses as a result of the industrialisation that more than 800 shale gas wells on the Fylde will bring to tourism and agriculture. Claims of ‘gold standard regulation’ remain to be backed up by any evidence that it will be effective; regulation of the banking and health sector certainly offers no reason for confidence in the ability of regulatory bodies to keep us from harm. Shale gas extraction has a well-documented history of risk to the health of people and livestock and brings with it emissions and waste that will damage the quality of our air and water both now and in the future.” Economically this industry has been gifted huge tax breaks by our government that may make it attractive for the companies that drill here but of far less worth to our economy.
