RAINE Foundation Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Rose Terhune. From her apartment high on Bethany Manor in Keyport, Rose Terhune, 76, is busy crocheting hat and scarf sets for the RAINE Foundation annual holiday gift drive in December. So far, shes halfway to her goal of 25 sets. I just believe God has a plan for me, and its to use my hands, said Rose. I feel that making hats and scarves for the needy will comfort them and keep them warm. Rose uses her limited income to purchase skeins of yarn with discount coupons. She can transform one skein into three cozy caps. After 50 years of crocheting, she needs no paper patterns. They are all in her head. Laid out neatly in her efficiency apartment are caps with shell stitch brims and metallic accents that sparkle in the sunlight, and thick scarves with cable designs. There are even patriotic red-white-and-blue sets, and a stocking cap for a Santa that is embroidered with Believe. Every day I sit here and crochet, said Rose, in her easy chair by a window overlooking the leafy autumn-hued trees and busy traffic hurrying along Route 35. In mid-December her handiwork will be offered to needy people to give to their loved ones as holiday gifts. When people take these hats, its going to make them feel better, she said, as her crochet hook expertly knotted the yarn on a black cap, destined for a man. It makes me feel better to make them too. God gave me these hands for a reason. RAINE Foundation salutes Rose Terhune for making a difference in our world with her time and talent.
