RANCHO CUCAMONGA >> The U.S. Forest Service, in a rare move, is closing the public areas of Cucamonga Canyon because low moisture in plants and trees can fuel a wildfire. It’s the first time in recent memory that a large swath of public forest land in the region has been closed as a preventive measure. Officials said there has never been a Cucamonga Canyon-specific forest closure since the late 1970s when national forest areas in the region were closed to the public during the dry summer months. The Forest Service is closing 1,650 acres in the canyon. “The closure, which begins today, will remain in effect until we have a significant change in the fire danger,” said Forest Service spokesman John Miller. “Historically, October is the absolute peak of the fire season and September is also a dangerous month.” Miller said there are no discussions or plans to close any other public forest lands in the region by the Forest Service because of high fire danger.
