RANGERS MAKE EIGHT SELECTIONS ON DAY TWO OF 2013 FIRST-YEAR PLAYER DRAFT Arlington, Texas— The Texas Rangers selected eight players on Day Two of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Rounds three through 10 of the draft took place today. The rest of the draft, through round 40, will be completed on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m. CDT. Below is additional information on the club’s selections today through the 10th round. The club will send out a final list at the conclusion of the draft tomorrow. In rounds 3-10, the Rangers selected eight players. The eight players include five right-handed pitchers, a second baseman, a shortstop, and catcher. Texas selected seven college players and made one high school pick. RHP DAVID LEDBETTER (99th overall) – The first player ever drafted from Cedarville University in western Ohio, the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder was named the 2013 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year after going 6-5 with a 3.15 ERA (25 ER/71.1 IP) in 14 games for the Yellow Jackets as a junior…the left-handed batting two-way player also hit .313 (36-115) with 4 doubles, 3 triples, 35 RBI, 24 runs, and 5 stolen bases, primarily as a DH but seeing some time in the outfield as well…he was named to the NCCAA All-American team in all 3 seasons at Cedarville, placing on the first team in 2012 and second team in 2011 and 2013…the 21-year-old has a twin brother, Ryan, who also pitched at Cedarville and is expected to be chosen in this year’s draft…attended Heritage Christian School in Indianapolis, Ind., where he won two state baseball titles and one in football. SS ISIAH KINER-FALEFA (130th overall) – The 18-year-old right-handed hitter from Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu, Hawaii led the Owls to the 2013 D1 Hawaii State Championship, batting .396 (21-53) with 3 doubles, one triple, 9 RBI, and 16 runs scored…the 5-foot-11, 165-pound infielder was a 2012 First-Team All-Interscholastic League of Honolulu selection as a junior, playing multiple infield positions…is committed to San Jose State. C JOE JACKSON (160th overall) – The left-handed batting catcher from The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. was named to the 2013 Louisville Slugger All-America third team after leading the Bulldogs with a .386 average (88-228), 67 RBI, 66 runs scored, and 19 doubles, to go along with 13 home runs…the 6-foot-1, 190-pound junior was the catcher on the 2013 Southern Conference All-Conference first team…a native of Mauldin, S.C., the 21-year-old was named the Most Outstanding Player in the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament for hitting .769 (10-13) as The Citadel lost in the tournament final…was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman team in 2011…Jackson was previously selected by Kansas City in the 50th round of the 2010 June draft, and is the great-great-great-nephew of former White Sox outfielder “Shoeless” Joe Jackson. RHP SAM WOLFF (190th overall) – The 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior from the University of New Mexico went 7-3 with a 2.90 ERA (30 ER/93.0 IP) and 75 strikeouts in 16 games/starts in 2013…the 22-year-old led the Lobos in strikeouts, innings pitched, and starts…played his first collegiate season at the University of San Diego and transferred to the College of Southern Nevada for his sophomore year before landing at New Mexico his junior season of 2012…was previously selected by the Angels in the 42nd round in 2009 and by the Red Sox in the 47th round in 2011…lettered in baseball, football, basketball, and track at Stevens High School in Rapid City, South Dakota…father, Steven, was an infielder in the Padres organization from 1983-85. RHP NICK GARDEWINE (220th overall) – The 19-year-old right-hander went 9-1 with a 2.12 ERA (20 ER/85.0 IP), 84 strikeouts, and 4 complete games in 13 games/starts for Kaskaskia College in Centralia, IL…the 6-foot-1, 160-pound Gardewine led the Blue Devils in wins, starts, innings, strikeouts, and ERA en route to the school’s first ever trip to the NJCAA Division 1 World Series…the right-hander tossed a no-hitter in his 3rd collegiate start on March 8 vs. Lake Land College. 2B EVAN VAN HOOSIER (250th overall) – The 5-foot-11, 190-pound second baseman was a First Team Region 18 selection this season at the College of Southern Nevada…the 19-year-old batted .369 (65-176) with 52 runs, 5 doubles, 11 triples, 5 home runs, and 33 RBI in 52 games for the Coyotes…was selected in the 26th round of the 2012 draft by the Philadelphia Phillies following First Team All-State honors as a senior at Green Valley (NV) High School. RHP JOSE SAMAYOA (280th overall) – The right-hander went 10-1 with a 1.73 ERA (15 ER/78.0 IP), 83 strikeouts, and a .173 opponent average in 16 games/15 starts as a senior, leading Lee University to the NAIA World Series…earned All-Conference honors as a junior at Lee, posting 8 wins and 7 saves…also attended New Mexico Junior College and Catalina High School in Tucson, Arizona. RHP COLE WIPER (310th overall) – The 6-foot-4, 195-pounder appeared in 7 games/3 starts for the University of Oregon this season as a redshirt freshman…was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 14th round of the 2011 June Draft…batted .432 and had a 0.64 ERA as a senior at Newport High School in Bellevue, Washington in 2011…named first-team All-Kingco as a pitcher and third baseman and second-team All-Kingco in basketball…grandfather, Art Wiper, played football for the University of Washington.
