RANGERS have confirmed the departure of defenders Carlos Bocanegra and Dorin Goian after their contracts were mutually ended yesterday. The two players were sent out on loan to Racing Santander and Spezia respectively last season in order to save on their high salaries. After discussions in the last few days, both men are now free to pursue their careers elsewhere having terminated their deals in Glasgow a year early. Bocanegra is expected to move back to his native America, with a move to MLS side Chivas USA reported to be one possibility. As an international for the States, however, it is believed he could be subject to the league’s allocation process. In that case, Toronto FC, Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders would have the first chances in that order to sign him. Whatever happens, a switch back to his homeland would suit 110-cap Bocanegra’s bid to get back into Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad ahead of next year’s World Cup finals in Brazil. He dropped out of the group last year and has been told playing in the Scottish lower leagues will hinder his quest for a recall. Goian, meanwhile, is understood to be keen to come back to the UK and is understood to be seeking a club in England. His time in Serie B was largely disappointing and the ex-Palermo stopper is keen to ply his trade on these shores once again. Bocanegra, of course, was appointed as Gers’ captain after David Weir left the club for Everton in January 2012. He played 40 competitive games for the club in all including the first three matches of last term’s successful Third Division win. The 34-year-old scored three times in a Light Blues shirt, once against Maribor in the Europa League and twice in the SPL against Dunfermline and Inverness. Goian featured once more in all competitions and also played in SFL3 last summer before his temporary move to Italy. The Romanian, now 32, scored his only goal in that time in the 3-2 League Cup loss to Falkirk at Westfield in September 2011.
