RANT: In principle, Im not against contemporary versions of hymns. Hymns often evolved in a fluid way, with many alternate versions and an honored tradition of reinventions that includes the great masters (especially J. S. Bach). Ive heard some really vital versions of hymns that honor the source material while also being legitimate reinventions into another genre (blues, funk, fusion, pop, etc.). HOWEVER, may I make a small request and remind all of you Chris Tomlins out there that youre not J. S. Bach, and while I applaud that you look to tradition for inspiration, your changes are generally not improvements. Contemporary worship music suffers from being one of the blandest genres out there, and it would be cool if you could make traditional material come alive a bit, rather than vice versa. Come on, man -- Bachs organ preludes rock harder than you guys. Lets start by not converting every original time signature into 4/4. Rant out.
