*RANT* Whatever happened to playing a sport for the sake of playing a sport? I am so over this hyper-competitive culture weve created in the name of youth sport. Tonight, Ames tried out a new field hockey place because she likes field hockey and has enjoyed the PSU camps a lot. The new place was WC Eagles FH in case you want to know which to avoid. Heres how it went down. At the first practice, the coach made fun of her. They put her in the lower skills group (which is totally fine bc its her first practice) and then the coach apparently belittled her the entire time for being too old to be with the younger girls. He told her that she was in a group with a 5yo because she wasnt good enough to be in a different group. Again, IT WAS HER FIRST PRACTICE. She was nearly in tears when it was over. I went to talk to the coach because I felt like it wasnt appropriate for the first practice. She yelled over me and told me that the other coach (her husband) was motivating Ames and that it works because hes very successful. Seriously?! Shes 9. 9. She just wanted to play field hockey, not try for the freaking Olympics. And he made her cry. Honestly, I have never wanted to hit someone so hard in my entire life.
