:::: RATS GALLOP TO FOUR WINS OVER WEEKEND :::: The RATS turned it on at RAT PARK on Saturday under clearing blue skies and in front a healthy home crowd with victories in all four grades against Randwick. With 3rds and 4th grade already getting the day off to a cracker start, 2nd grade put on an entertaining display against a spirited Wicks attack, coming up with the 28-10 win. The Wicks did well in the first half to put the RATS under some pressure and showed some flare in attack but the RATS forwards had their measure early and were quick to run down any breaks. Brushing off an earlier Wicks spear tackle in 3rd Grade, HAYDN BLACK was back to his best in 2nds, earning the RATS some ground in the attacking phases. Flanker SAM CROMPTON added some additional muscle up front and the chase and tackle of BENJI MARSHALL and PETER BARRATT contained the Wicks well. Showing that the RATS have serious depth in the backs through all the ranks now, the RATS put pacey wingers BRAD DIXON and MAX JONES over the line for a try and a double respectively, with LOUIS ANDERSON following suit with a single of his own. Cant fault the boot of JAIME FORBES either who converted all four tries to secure the win. It was a promising lead into the 1st XV clash and the RATS showed a renewed energy this week, no doubt buoyed by the home crowd and the return to full strength of SAM WARD and MARTIN COLLINS. COLLINS had an inspired game, scoring a try off a lightening charge down. Not done yet, he repeating his efforts to put a rebound into the hands of his captain, getting LUKE HOLMES across to score and set up an impressive assist to give JOSH HOLMES line honours as well. There were rather familiar patterns to the RATS play again this week - flyhalf HAMISH ANGUS opening the account early with a penalty goal before the visitors took the lead with a converted try. The COLLINS try was to give the lead back to the RATS but it was short lived. Heading into the sheds the RATS were just 2 points down but emerged from their half-time chat full of determination to quickly take the lead and hold it until full time. A last minute lapse on the bell saw Randwick awarded possession and some handy ball work saw the Wicks cross to award them a consolation bonus point try. But it wasnt enough and the RATS scored their 10th win of the season. The RATETTES were next to take to the main field as they faced Rockdale in a chilly match under lights. With the Wallaroo contingent now back in the RATETTES squad after the Tri-Nations tour to NZ, this was the first time the reigning premiers had had a hit out in two weeks. They came out hard and the battle between the two sides was certainly fierce - resulting in RATETTE flanker REBECCA STALDER breaking her nose in the clash. Both TUI ORMSBY and CHLOE DALTON worked to find holes in the Rockdale defence, while the work of NUTTA AHIPENE, EMILY ROBINSON and SARAH LAMAN was crucial in the RATETTES claim for territory. It was MARDI WATTS and LEONIE BURNS who finally crossed to score the only points for the RATETTES. But the victory ultimately went to Rockdale this round, with the clock no friend to the RATETTES who were unable to make up the final 9 point shortfall before the bell. Meanwhile over at Latham Park, the COLTS faced a determined Randwick. The late change of venue on the morning of the match due to inclement weather and injuries didnt help the COLTS cause as they struggled to contain their rivals. Final scores went all Randwicks way for three grades to give the galloping greens their only wins of the day: Colts 1 Randwick 77-19 Colts 2 Randwick 45-13 Colts 3 Randwick 30-15.
