RAVENNA TEEN GETS PROBATION FOR SEPTEMBER 2013 ROBBERY R-C staff report Published: July 27, 2014 4:00AM A Ravenna teen has been sentenced to probation and a new specialized state program for low-level or first-time felony offenders after pleading guilty to robbing a 16-year-old boy in Ravenna last fall Savon M. Oden, 18, of 6736 Sumner St., pleaded guilty to robbery, a third-degree felony, in March. He could have received one to three years in prison for admitting to robbing his victim on Sept. 20, 2013. Instead, Portage County Common Pleas Judge Laurie Pittman ordered Oden to participate in the Smart Ohio program for 90 days starting July 1, with privileges to leave for work, probation and counseling appointments. Pittman also placed Oden on five years probation, with conditions including a substance abuse evaluation, full-time employment within nine months, no contact with the victim, restitution of $35 to be paid to the victim within one year and fines and court costs totaling $551. The Smart Ohio Plan funds increased alternatives to prison for low-level criminal offenders, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.
