RE: The John Wayne Contest While I cant call myself a huge John Wayne fan, I do admire what he provided for the western genre and the film world in general. I have a large fondness for Stagecoach and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, but my favorite Wayne film (and arguably the best) has to be The Searchers. Its the obvious and likely most common pick, but so be it. The film has everything one looks for in a classic American western, with the added value of a quality production, some strong performances, and a sprawling story that makes an attempt to tackle some issues from a character standpoint. Wayne, in particular, does stellar work in this film, which challenges who he once was, what he fights for, and where a mission like the one he is on in this film will ultimately take him. It doesnt hurt that John Ford does great directorial work here, with both his visual eye and use of framing to better connect the audience to what is happening within this story and let one absorb all the details. And of course, The Searches has been a huge influence for many directors, from David Lean to Steven Spielberg.
