READ!!! AN ABNORMAL SATURDAY It was not the normal Saturday and she knew too well. The streets were silent cold and she could hear the heavy thuds of soldier ants across the gutters that lapelled the street. It was late in the evening and she walked alone on the street. Her heart banged and banged as she paced down the lonely street to her house. The street lights were unusually off and the sky was darkened, still, starless and dreary. Even the AKANCHAWA cool spot that doored the street was deserted and there laid across the tables, fallen green and black bottles and on the ground were foaming spits of spilled liquor. The tense odour arose and clustered around her nostrils and thoughts too and thickened her suddenly rising intensity of fear. She wished Dennis was there with her but he was faraway in Abuja on one of his long business trips and had not come home in a while. She wanted to think of Paradise and sunlit beaches but all that came to her head were roving and twin headed spirits, snarling and roaring with fluids dripping down their forked tongues! And the fluids were nothing but thick red blood! Viscous but flowing and dripping into the streets! She wanted to maim her thoughts but the more she closed her eyes , the more physical they appeared and their canines tickled her earlobes whispering hymns of death and sorrow. Or so she imagined. And when she managed to open her eyes! The street was darker and seemed to grow darker into cobwebs of misty smokes entangling the walk and fiddling with her already feeble feet! The road seemed to grow longer and bats whispered on the trees and flew around unhindered letting out startling shrills. Her fear heightened and she heard a loud boom go off! She stood, stuck to the ground and unable to move; unable to let out the scream that had swollen her gullet as she tightened her eyelids and when she finally opened her eyes, before her were two bloodcurdling eyes glowing in the dark, daring and frightening and below it were forked canines! She finally let out a huge scream and sounded more like a roar hitting the walls of street and boomeranging at her in twirling echoes. The animal quickly pushed into the gutter and disappeared. She could not pace again and broke into a race towards her house. And she ran, everything seemed to pull her back. As she ran she felt spirits pursue her, growling at her and coming so close that she felt her clothes and long hair being tugged at. At when she least expected, she tripped over a stone. The spirits disappeared behind her back and hissed in low tones. They seemed to let out horrible laughs too that quaked her head. She picked herself up and finally reached her house amidst silent series of prayers. And when she got to her house, she was shocked to see the gates open and remembered she had locked it in the morning when she left home. Her fear heightened more. She slid into her compound and was shocked to see her room’s light go on and then off again! She paced and her heart pounded! She could hear every single beat of her heart and how it sounded like bomb going off each time. The tension in the ambiance tightened and she made to pass the back door at the kitchen. Just then, the lights in the kitchen went on. She paused. She could feel hot urine trickle down her thighs and she panted like a tired dog. She could draw out the shape of a man inside the kitchen and just then she heard the sound of the knife being draw out of its holster! That sonorous metallic sound! There was a piercing cry and then something flew out of the window and into the nearby dump. She did not catch the sight of the object but she felt something splatter on her white shirt where she bent. She turned to look and all she saw was blood sprinkled all over her cloth! Red thick blood! A roaring laughter evoked from the kitchen and just then the lights went off again but she did not hear the knife being returned to the holster. The holder still had it in his hand. As she made to turn, she heard the front door open and close at the same time in a loud bang. Her heart almost fell out of her mouth. She did not know which way to turn now but it definitely was not towards the front door! She continued towards the kitchen and heard some footsteps walking round the compound! She rushed into the house and banged the door behind her. The first thing she saw was a huge hanging on the kitchen door, soaked in blood with a few dripping. Her eyes did not catch any other thing until she felt a heavy touch on her shoulder where she had stood stuck in her own imagination! And when she turned to see who it was, it was the knife she saw first, draining from just severing a mangled head, dripping, rising! She wanted to let out a scream but she could not. Her tongue folded and her mouth was stuck, agape. Her eyes met his but she was held in transfix. The air in her lungs tightened and she could not imagine anything anymore. She could not breathe! Her hair strangled around her neck. The air was silent still and her heart seemed to be snatched and torn away from her ribs. She saw his shining teeth and his rude laughter! “Deola, I finally killed a chicken! See”. He pointed to the strangled and severed cockerel on the kitchen sink dripping with blood. It was Dennis. She fainted. PROFESSOR X
