READ IT FOR YOURSELF! Do you have a Bible in your home? Most - TopicsExpress

READ IT FOR YOURSELF! Do you have a Bible in your home? Most every American would probably answer YES to this question. When was the last time you actually opened it and read even one verse of scripture in it? If you were honest you would probably say it has been quite a while. That is the typical answer and most Bibles sit in dust on a book shelf or end table. The reason for this question is that most of us do not read what we do not totally understand, would you agree? I would NEVER pick up a book on physics or calculus to read for enjoyment but I would on the subject of history. I know the average person would understand a few of the Old Testament books (Genesis, Exodus, and the Psalms) but Leviticus and Numbers? Those are a bit had to follow (my opinion). What about the New Testament such as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? But then there is the book of Revelation which can become quite the challenge for most (definitely me). My recommendation is to start reading in the book of John then take a chapter in Romans or Ephesians first because these are straight forward and for the most part easy to read and understand and will open doors for you for the entire Bible. Find a good commentary either on-line or one your pastor recommends. Do not take others’ word for scripture but learn yourself by studying. Reading the Bible will allow you to see who the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is and why Jesus had to come to earth to sacrifice His own life for you and me to have a chance to enter heaven. Jesus said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (Luke 24: 44-47) As I have said before, would you learn to be a medical doctor from a television program, or would you want the pilot flying you across the country to have learned to fly the 747 jetliner from a correspondence course? God forbid! You can never learn what God truly wants for your life without first reading the scripture for yourself.
