READ THIS IF YOU HAVE TIME #3 CHOICES January 14th , I was celebrating pongal in my hometown. It was around 10 in the morning. I was standing outside my house and taking pictures of myself, “selfies” as they call it nowadays. I was wearing white shirt and white dothi and black aviator glasses. I was trying to imitate Ajith’s costume from the movie “Veeram” which had released 4 days back. A lot of people were on the streets doing some work or the other in front of their houses. I was also randomly taking pictures of the sun, few cows, cats around my house. Suddenly there was a loud screeching sound, a painful cry and a loud thud. I immediately turned to look at it. The loud screeching sound was that of a TVS apache. The painful cry was that of a street dog and the loud thud was the sound of the bike and the guy who was riding it, falling down. It was a moment to act. For an instance I felt like I was the hero of a movie and it was up to me to save him. I kicked my right foot up, catching the dothi in one hand, imagining somebody was filming the scene and with “Veeram” theme song playing in my mind,I walked towards the incident. All the other people on the street too ran to see what had happened. I went straight to him. He was half scared, sitting close to the wall and in shock. His left leg was hurt. He couldn’t land it on the floor. He was about 1-2 years old, white with brown spots and a street dog. Yes......... I ran to the dog and not to the guy. All the others ran to the guy, helped him up, dusted him and enquired about his injuries. They were all blaming the dog for the accident. The guy got up on his bike again, gave me a weird look and left the area. The others slowly walked towards me. They were 6 in total. All were looking at the dog and then one guy spoke. “yenpa thambi, manushan vizhundhu kedakkuran, nee naaya poi thookuriye ??... adha adichu verattu pa..” [Translation: “Excuse me boy, why are you attending to the dog instead of the man who fell down?? Chase that dog away”]. What the guy spoke fell in my ear but i was busy checking the dog. He dint have any major injuries. His leg just got twisted little bit and he was scared. I just rubbed his head and cheeks and he was sitting quietly and calmly. I turned to the guy, removed my glasses, looked at him and said, “Aandavan andha manushuna kaapaatha unga 6 pera anuppinaan. Andha velaya neenga senjeenga. Indha naaya kaapatha enna anuppinaan, andha velaya naan senjen.. avlo than. Ellarum manushangalaye paathukittu irundha, michatha yaaru paakarthu..??” [Translation: God sent 6 of you to save the man who fell down and you people did that. He sent me to save the dog and I did that. That’s all. If everyone is busy caring about the people, who ll care about the rest ??]. Saying this I wore back my glasses with style, “Veeram” theme song started playing again in my mind as I walked back inside my house.
