READING, STUDYING, OR BEING TAUGHT In the old days, the secondary school graduate went up to the university to READ, shall we say, French and Spanish and earned a B.A. (honors) degree in French and Spanish. Later it became more normal to say that one went to the university to STUDY, shall we say, French and Spanish in order to earn the B.A. (honors) in French and Spanish. At Howard University, professors of French and Spanish are encouraged—even mandated—to see themselves as TEACHERS. Students, then, no longer STUDY or—God forbid—READ French or Spanish, but rather ARE TAUGHT French and Spanish. This takes all of the responsibility out of the hands of the students and lays it on the shoulders of the TEACHERS.
