RECEIVED FROM GRAHAM BELL. (Classified as Motor Trawler: date of loss cited as 2 September 1974). Artemis: [this vessel was] wrecked on rocks to the East of Cullen. Registration: Fraserburgh. (Location of loss cited as N57 41.67 W2 49.50). Notes The 65 ft Fraserburgh inshore trawler Artemis, which yesterday ran ashore between Logie Head [name: NJ 528 682] and Findlater Castle [name: NJ 542 672] ripped her bottom out on the razor-sharp rocks of Sunnyside beach [possibly that indicated on the OS 1:50,000 map at NJ 537 673]. The vessel, which had been on her way to the Isle of Man, via the Caledonian Canal, ran ashore only 100 ft from the high water mark and was stuck tight. Distress flares were fired about 4.00 am. Fortunately, the weather was good. The five crewmen launched an inflatable dinghy and landed safely on the rocky shore, and made their way on foot to Cullen. The scene of the wreck is an isolated bay overlooked from the east by Findlater Castle [/en/results/?mapno=NJ56NW&site=15&submit=search&autolink=1NJ56NW 15]. At low tide, the Artemis was sitting high out of the water on back-breaking rock ridges. (Photograph of Artemis aground). Source: Aberdeen Press and Journal, 3 September 1974.
