RED ALERT FROM POPLAR BLUFF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE! Quick Change Artist! The Chamber has received a visit from a Chamber Member (restaurant) informing us that a Quick Change Artist has been hitting the area, mainly in the evenings. An African American male wearing a ball cap has been purchasing small items to get the cashier to open the register and then confusing the register operator until he gets more money from them than he originally gave. He usually starts by paying with a large bill such as a $100 bill. Tips on how to handle a Quick Change Artist: The best way to avoid this problem is to take the money presented, keep it in the open - for example, on top of the cash register - but in your hands. -- Do not put the money from the customer into the register until the change has been made. This way employees can see exactly what was given to them and know how much change to make. -- Handle each requested transaction separately. That means make change as requested and close the drawer. If the customer asks for another transaction, take his money first, then change it. -- If a customers requests for change start to sound confusing, ask the customer to slow down or stop the transaction completely to start over. Also, having your employee call a supervisor to help will usually diffuse the situation! --Tell the customer your business is not a bank. The quick-change artist will attempt to get two or three transactions ahead of you so you forget how much change is actually needed --For the most part, quick-change cons usually arent after a lot of money when they pull the scam - maybe $10 or $20, because the small amount doesnt arouse suspicion as would requesting change for $100. If you suspect you are being a victim, please IMMEDIATELY contact the Poplar Bluff Police Department at 785-5776 or the Butler County Sheriffs Department at 785-8444. It was requested that we pass this information on to help protect the business community and to help catch this individual.
