REDLINE ROCKED TO A STREET STOCK FEATURE TO REMEMBER – MCCLURE WINS For everybody that was at Mount Buninyong on Saturday night November 29th, they may have come to see the big powerful Late Models, they may have come to watch friends and family members in Wingless Sprints, Standard Saloons or Open Sedans, however they went home talking about the Street Stock final, one of the best in years between North Geelong’s Brad McClure four time national champion, Morris Ahearn a trucker from outer Melbourne & local & current Tasmanian Champion Mick Clark. Almost thirty Street Stocks attended race night, twenty two started the final and right through out the field there developed numerous battles between competitors & it was the battle at the front with Ahearn leading the race being chased by McClure and Clark right until four laps to go where McClure made the decisive passing move to take the lead and go on to win with Ahearn trying on the very last lap, very last turn to take the lead once more. McClure, Ahearn, Clark were the top three and back behind them Darryl Atkinson & Jason Degoldi rounded out the top five. Earlier in the night heat wins went the way of Clark, Atkinson, Mark Purdie, Ahearn, Shaun Henry, McClure, Phil Pottage, Degoldi & Ahearn once again who became the only double heat winner on the night. McClure commented on the race win afterwards. “From where I was sitting behind Ahearn that was one of the best adrenalin rushes you could have and everybody in the field was a credit to themselves as we weaved our way through the field getting through with minimal interference. I’m going home now to watch that on video!” The South Australian versus Victoria Late Model Sedan Shootout was much anticipated & the potential of this division to continue to grow was shown when the big powerful machines rumbled around Redline making some awesome passing movies on the low line and around the top. Unfortunately for the division the feature race was short lived due to early race carnage & the curfew at the venue forced officials to close the race down leaving the feature declared a none event due to the proportion of laps not being enough to constitute a race. Earlier Mount Gambier’s Stuey Hill, Justin Pearson a Victorian & the top driver of the night in heat races Mat Crimmins from South Australia won the three heat races. Wingless Sprints also ran three heats and a final and it was Ballarat local Sam Wren who took the spoils. Wren from Delacombe won heat before Corey Pretlove took the win in the second. Daniel Beared who came direct from a bad round of golf to the race track made up for his shocking early morning score to take the win in heat three. The final was eventful with a number of incidents causing stoppages none more so important in the scheme of the event than contact between Simon Smith & Haydn Reeves whilst in second and third. Both drivers went to the rear of the field & Wren marched to victory at the restart from Robert Lake, David Alford, Shaun Beard & Steve Hodder. Standard Saloons were entertaining right through the night with a handful of quality cars in the mix for wins in the heats, in the end it was the Belmont Speedway Drivers Club number one Standard Saloon racer Scott Whittle that took the win when he beat Nick Chrystie, Tim Hutchinson, Joanne Scott & Shell Sinclair in the final. The Open Sedans had a great showing of racers from the Bendigo, Shepparton areas of Victoria who came down to have some fun against their Ballarat & Geelong based competition. Joshua Brown, Des Birkin, Frank Dickson & Tim McPherson won the four heat races before Birkin & McPherson put on a cracking race in the final as the worked forward away from the chasing field and under & around competition they were passing. McPherson made the winning move towards the very end of the event when he made the right choice as Birkin & he approached a slower competitor. McPherson beat Birkin, David Donegan, Shannon Burke & Rahmon Rivero the first of the Shepparton mob to finish. In Super Sedans the feature was won by Scott Purdie ahead of Sean Lister & Lionel West. The next race meeting at Redline Raceway will see the return of the Modified Production Sedans & their Victorian state series. This race see’s competitors from Mildura, right through Gippsland & Geelong up against each other with Gary Ainley a local Ballarat racer keen to finish strongly. Mini Sprintcars, Grand Prix Midgets, Open Sedans & Formula V8s complete the program on December the 13th.
