REFLECTION Today is the feast day of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order. He was a soldier who was injured in battle. While he was recovering from his wounds, he discovered Jesus. He realized that when he thought worldly thoughts, he ended up feeling dry and empty. But when he thought of God and prayed to him, he was fulfilled. He was like the man in today’s Gospel who found a treasure or a pearl of great worth and sold everything he had to buy it. After his conversion, Ignatius became totally immersed in Christ. He would later recruit other young men to form the Company of Jesus. Not all of us are called to become Jesuits, but we are all called to be soldiers of Christ. We are called to actively make Christ known to men. A soldier serves the king and fights the enemies of the kingdom. We serve our Lord Jesus Christ, and do battle with evil. We should not say, “Let the Jesuits do the fighting for us.” Instead we should imbibe the Jesuit motto to be men and women for others. To truly become a person for others, we must first be people of prayer, people with a deep relationship with God. Then after receiving God’s message, we can go into the world to spread God’s message to others. May there be more men and women eager to be messengers of God’s Word and God’s love!
