REGINA | Royal Saskatchewan Museum This Sandhill Crane is one of our specimens on view right now at the Regina Public Library. It is part of “An Index of Saskatchewan Fauna & Other Curiosities”, an art installation curated by Caitlin Mullan. For this project the RSM and the Dunlop Art Gallery have temporarily exchanged artworks and specimens, so be sure to also come see the art that is temporarily on view in our Life Sciences Gallery too! Before the crane was displayed, her feathers were cleaned by Conservator Alyssa Becker-Burns. The dust coated the crane so evenly it was at first hard to tell they were dirty. However, gently brushing aside the first layer of feathers made her true colours obvious! Conservators call it “mechanical cleaning” when no solvents (water included) are involved, and this often comes down to attentive vacuuming , using a unit with special filters and an adjustable motor so the suction isn’t too powerful for the delicate feathers. The crane’s long spindly legs were carefully braced for transportation to the RPL.
