REKORD WEEKEND NEWS: POSTAL STRIKE FAR FROM OVER The ongoing nationwide post office workers’ strike led by the Communication Workers Union (CWU) entered into its fourth month and has brought the South African Post Office (SAPO) to its knees. The beleaguered workers in Free State province took it to the streets, marching to the Bloemfontein based Regional Post Office Offices on Friday, October 31, where they handed over their memorandum. National General Secretary of CWU, Aubrey Tshabalala, explained that they hold a view that the ongoing labour unrest in SAPO is not good for the business hence they need to move swiftly in averting the ongoing turmoil. “We felt that there is a need to engage with all workers in identifying areas that need urgent attention to end this labour unrest. We commit ourselves in a permanent solution into bringing stability in SAPO. We believe that bringing stability in the company and further avoid malfunctioning of organizational structure must be rooted in the organisation,” he explained. Their requests had, amongst other things, included the demand that the casual workers be given permanent contracts with benefits of which South African Post Office claims they were looking into it when the union decided to go on strike. “We demand that 588 workers who were dismissed in 2013 and re-employed 2014 must be reinstated in their original positions of employment with the same benefits that they used to enjoy prior their dismissal. A 7,5% across the board salaries adjustment backdated to 1 April 2014, with further 0,5% effective 1 January 2015 however not backdated. Furthermore in the next financial year 8% + CPI salary adjustment,’’ read the memorandum. The Communications Workers Union is also calling for the dismissal of senior officials in the Human Resource and Payroll divisions as they accuse them of corruption. “We are aggrieved by the continuation of the corruption activities, in particular the HR Executive. In the past couple of months there has been a co-ordinated work from the HR/Payroll to fraudulently removing CWU members (subscriptions) to other pseudo union,’’ the statement read further. The representative of SAPO in Free State Ezekiel Mooko accepted the memorandum on behalf of the management and promised to give it to the relevant people.
