The titles of ‘Sultan’ and ‘Emir’ are clearly religious (Islamic) titles, how come in some parts of northern Nigeria holders of these titles parade and purport themselves as ‘traditional rulers’? This question is more pertinent with the presence of non-adherents of the Islamic faith in the territories over which the Sultan or the various Emirs preside? Having a Sultan or an Emir masquerading as a ‘Traditional Ruler’ is equivalent to having a Bishop of a Diocese or a Priest as a ‘Traditional Ruler. Restructuring and renegotiating our contraption will yet offer us an opportunity at salvaging whatever is left of our virtues.
