REMEMBERING A GREAT LEADER AND PRESIDENT: LEVY PATRICK MWANAWASA SC Levy Patrick Mwanawasa was the third President of Zambia. He ruled the country from January 2002 until his death on 19th August 2008. He is credited for having initiated a campaign to rid the country of corruption. Prior to his election, Mwanawasa served as vice president from 1991 to 1994. Mwanawasas distaste for corruption and indiscipline in public office earned him respect and admiration both at home and abroad. He set up a special task force to investigate and prosecute corruption and impropriety in public office including that of his predecessor Frederick Titus Jacob Chiluba the second president of Zambia. Mwanawasa achieved a long sought goal of making Zambia debt free and presided over Zambia reaching a completion point of the so called HIPC or the heavily indebted poor countries program. HIPC are a group of 39 developing countries with high levels of poverty and debt overhang which were eligible for special assistance from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Mwanawasa remains the only president who is remembered fondly by the people of Zambia regardless of political affiliations. (Full tribute to follow)
