REMINDER – Elephant Trees Ride (inc Northern Championships) Bishop Auckland, Co Durham CLOSING DATE – 17th June ‘The Elephant Trees’ are a local landmark in lower Weardale. They are an old stand of Beech trees which from certain angles look just like ……...........elephants! The routes for the Ride begin and end in Hamsterley Forest and all distances offered from 32k and upwards include a stretch on the beautiful moorland surrounding Hamsterley Forest, including Eggleston, Bollihope, Hamsterley Common and Doctor’s Gate. One of England’s most special places – a stunning landscape of open heather moors and peatlands, attractive dales and hay meadows, tumbling upland rivers and wonderful woods. If you enjoy the challenge of a true ‘Endurance Ride’ with stunning scenery, a challenging route and a friendly atmosphere then this is the ride for you. Why not come and enjoy riding the so called ‘Backbone of England’ - you won’t be disappointed. The organiser, Sylvia Briggs, tells us, “It should be noted that there have been improvements to some of the route for riders tackling 32km and higher. The ‘metal’ bridge has been replaced with a wider bridge and in fact the whole of that stretch near Dryderdale Down towards the stream and the bridge have all been improved. I rode it last week.” The 2013 ride will be offering an 80km CER - ‘The Northern Championships’, 80km GER, 65km GER, 40km GERs, 32km GERs and 32km, 25km and 15km Pleasure Ride classes. The venue has changed from that originally advertised. It will be back at The Grove Car Park within the forest, the same as last year. The Route is receiving a few rain showers this week which will help the going. The organisers have secured sponsorship from Baileys Horse Feeds as the main sponsors giving very generously and The Worshipful Company of Saddlers are donating Leather Goods. There are also samples from British Horse Feeds for all entrants and any other goodies they can rustle up. Sylvia says, “This will be the last year for The Northern Championships at The Elephant Trees Ride as it will move to Northumberland next year, so who needs to win that lovely trophy and some great prizes and hopefully take in some fabulous views on the way.”
