REPOST: such a scary thing Jean Brillman Richard LewisPhilip Stevenson Well it finally happened to me 12 years working with dogs and one died on me today. Right on my table. This french bull dog hated having his nails trimmed with a passion. The owner used to only have it done once or twice a year and they would all curl under the pad and bleed when they were trimmed. I finally talked the owner into coming in every 2 weeks to have them filed so I could keep them in good shape and this happened. I use a large breed muzzle that encompasses the whole head when I have a flat faced dog that bites so I dont have to worry about dogs not getting enough oxygen. I was on the second foot when he simultaneously pooped peed and threw up. I stopped immediately, noticed his tongue was purple, I started chest compressions and mouth to snout (even though he had just thrown up, I didnt care) My co groomer Rachel Christensen Drove me as fast as she could to the vet, Me in the passenger seat trying to revive the dog. The vet is only 5 minutes away but it wasnt close enough. The vet said that had the dog had a heart attack at the clinic, he would only have had a 50% chance of making it. The owner had seen how the dog acted in the past so he seemed understanding but he said his wife and 6 year old grandson would not be so understanding. I am still in shock. It makes me want to turn away all belligerent dogs but I know that if that dog had to be sedated every time it needed a nail trim it would be hell on its organs. I just dont know what to do. I forgot to mention that we were in such a hurry to get to the vet that I didnt tell our bather what was going on we just ran out the back door, left the door open and my spoo got out and was running in the street ( someone brought her back while we were gone luckilly) I will add that the vet said if this ever happens in the future that you cant press hard enough on the chest, you should nearly break ribs to actually get any blood to pump and so I know I didnt pump hard enough
