REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE MONROVIA, LIBERIA Press release September 13, 2013 Liberian Farmers attending the ongoing International Multi-Stakeholders Dialogue on progress achieved in West Africa 10 years after Maputo Declaration are recommending an increase budgetary support to agriculture in order to meet the 10% Maputo target. The Local Farmers are also recommending increased budgetary support to Farmer Unions, Cooperatives, and Farmers led programs throughout Liberia to enable them adequately address the issues of food insecurity. Making the recommendations Friday at the Monrovia City Hall an Executive of the Farmers Union Network of Liberia Rev Robert Bimba called on government to transform the Central Agricultural Research Institution based in Bong County to an autonomous Institution. Rev. Bimba further called on government and donor institutions to endeavor to build the capacity of local farmers enabling them to have skills in modern farming technologies. However, Rev. Bimba disclosed that Liberia has made some progress since the Maputo Declaration in 2003. The Farmers Union Executive said the formulation of the Liberia Agricultural Sector Investment Program has enable Liberia to receive a US$46.5 Million grant in 2011for agricultural development. He also named the inclusion of Farmers in the Project Management Unit steering committee Board of the Ministry as part of the progress since the Maputo Declaration. At the same time, Rev. Bimba noted that since the Maputo Declaration many donor partners including the World Bank, Africa Development Bank among others are now financing agricultural development projects in Liberia.
