RESPECT TO THE BBCS LANSANA FOFANA !! Lansana Fofana (left in photo) is a veteran Journalist who has worked for many local and reputable International media houses. I met him in early 1992 when RUF rebels were repelled by Sierra Leone Government troops from the strategic eastern town of Gandorhun - 20 miles outside Sefadu, the diamond rich district headquarters of Kono. Lans Fofy covered the civil war in Sierra Leone for the BBC at the admiration of even his critics. He reported the first gun shot in the eastern town of Bomaru, Kailahun District on 23rd March, 1991. He is a seasoned and highly respected Sierra Leonean Journalist. He introduced me to many high-profile BBC Journalists: Hilton Fyle, one time presenter of BBC Network Africa; Mark Doyle, one time BBC West African Correspondent and now World Affairs correspondent for BBC News; Hassan Harouni, Presenter and Producer of the BBC’s Focus on Africa programme and many others. We took this photo at a weekly press briefings that was usually hosted by the then United Nations Assistant Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) at Mammy Yoko Hotel in 1999. Time really flies. Lans Fofy currently reports for the Inter Press Service (IPS) a global news agency.
