RESULTS OF THE 2014 CHALLENGE ON THE CANAL Rochester kicked off its fall rowing season on Saturday at Hobart in Geneva, NY with a 4.3km head regatta against RIT, Ithaca College, and St. John Fisher. Racing conditions on this warm and sunny day consisted of a mild head current and light head wind. Rochester raced three boats, two varsity fours and a varsity eight. The first varsity four started in the middle of the pack, taking off strong and settling into rate by the 1500 meter mark. They lengthened out at 30 strokes per minute and starting walking up on the Ithaca boat ahead. The Rochester four continued to move, eventually finishing the race with only a few lengths between them and Ithaca. Finish time: 18:05.1 Lineup: Cox, Brett Chenoweth 4) Jared Freedman 3) Jon Curtis 2) Justin Fraumeni 1) Evan Lea The second varsity four began last in the pack, and started off holding a steady 28 strokes per minute. They kept a good ratio through the body of the race and bumped to a 30 for the last 500 meters, sprinting through the finish with a little distance between them and the next boat. Finish time: 19:46.4. Lineup: Cox, Johnson Truong 4) Alex Abrams 3) Aaron Lim 2) Zach Kaye 1) Austin Bailey Rochester’s varsity 8 was the last men’s race of the day and ultimately the closest. Beginning at the front of the pack, the 1V shot out of the start at a steady 30 strokes per minute. Through the body of the race they kept well ahead of the chasing Ithaca boat, pushing them back with every stroke. At 2000 meters to go 1V bumped the rate up to a 32, and then sprinted to the finish with 600 meters to the finish. They pulled through the finish well ahead of the chasing boats, with final results showing a second place finish. Rival crew RIT took first by seconds.
