The most dreaded cult in our nation are not the big names you mention in hush tones,it is simply Football Fanaticism. Oh yes,you heard it right. Football Fanaticism is the most powerful cult in Nigeria today. The major football clubs in Europe today enjoy a cult-like following among their fans down here so much that fans of one club regard fans of other clubs as mortal enemies . Some christians are even ready to miss sunday service if it crashes with their favourite clubs crucial match. The average Nigerian youth would rather join a fellow club fan to beat his own brother who is a supporter of another club to stupor over a trivial argument on club supremacy. Of course,by now you should know that Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo enjoy greater followership/loyalty among our youths than even President Jonathan .The bond of unity that exists among fans of the same club is stronger than an iron rod. God help you if you are sitting in the midst of a group of youths belonging to the same club and you inadvently criticize any of their players, you would surely go home with a broken head. What more, football fans in Nigeria have stabbed so many innocent souls to death at match viewing centres for dissing their clubs.At times I wonder if only we could devote the same level of enthusiasm, seriousness and unbending flair to other aspects of our lives perhaps Nigeria would be a better place for us all.
